Ralph Nader says people who call him a spoiler are engaging in "political bigotry."
The 73-year-old consumer advocate, who announced Sunday that he will run for president again as a third-party candidate, was interviewed on FOX Business Channel Monday morning. He cast himself as purer than the Democratic and Republican hopefuls because he is not beholden to corporate interests.
Nader, who ran in 2000 as a Green Party candidate and in 2004 as an independent, also tongue-lashed the media and others who say his candidacy was the reason Al Gore lost to George W. Bush in 2000.
"You labeled me 'spoiler Nader,' and I resent that," Nader said. "That is trying to say that a small party or independent candidate is a second-class citizen, and you have displayed political bigotry.
"You would never say that to the major candidates, and you working for FOX News would never have said when two [cable news] networks were underway that two networks were enough. You wanted diversity, so stop being politically bigoted and contend on the subject matter and the issues that the other parties are ignoring."
Nader said the use of the word "spoiler" in a political campaign should cease.
"If you ask Gore why he isn't president, he'll say he did win but it was taken from him. ... If we have an equal right to run, either all of us are spoilers or none of us are spoilers trying to take votes (from) one another."
On Sunday, neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama welcomed Nader's candidacy.
"Obviously its not helpful to whoever our Democratic nominee is," Clinton said.
Obama said, "His function as a perennial presidential candidate I don't think is helping put food on the table or deal with the issues that are so important to a lot of working families."
