‘Phony’ Romney Given ‘Anti-Endorsement’ by New Hampshire Newspaper
MILFORD, N.H. — The Concord Monitor broke with political tradition Sunday, telling readers in the state with the first presidential primary why they should not vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney instead of whom they should support. In a scathing anti-endorsement that called Romney a “disquieting figure,” the New Hampshire newspaper’s editorial board said he looks and acts like a presidential contender but “surely must be stopped” because he lacks the core philosophical beliefs to be a trustworthy president.
In particular, the newspaper noted the former Massachusetts governor’s change of heart on such issues as abortion rights, stem-cell research and access to emergency contraception, as well as on signing an anti-tax pledge.
“When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state’s first-in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we’ll know it,” the newspaper said. “Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no.”
Romney’s campaign sloughed off the criticism and instead pointed to his endorsement Sunday by the Sioux City Journal in Iowa, the state whose Jan. 3 caucuses kick off the presidential nominating process. Romney also has been stumping hard in New Hampshire ahead of its Jan. 8 primary, including stops here and in two other communities on Sunday.
“The Monitor’s editorial board is regarded as a liberal one on many issues, so it is not surprising that they would criticize Governor Romney for his conservative views and platform,” said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden. “Governor Romney has taken firm positions that are at odds with the board’s support for driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, their position against school choice and their advocacy for taking `Under God’ out of the Pledge of Allegiance. The governor happens to disagree with the editorial board on all those issues.”
In its endorsement, the Iowa newspaper said: “Romney combines an outsider’s new face with a proven track record of success as an executive in both the private and public sectors. …Personally, he is engaging, even charming, he has shown an ability to reach across partisan divides, and he is passionate on the campaign trail. In terms of leadership qualities, he possesses ‘it,’ and the importance of ‘it’ should not be diminished.”

I want people to realize all of the negative ads that has been put out against Romney by not only McCain but Huckabee as well, and what Romney’s response has been. Huckabee has an average of using the word “dishonest” in interviews agains Romney 2 to 3 times per interview, and what has been Romney’s response? (something time and time again such as the following ) “I feel sorry that they are resorting to personal attacks, They are both good men, but we just differ in political opinions.” Who then, I ask is the better man of the three? Who is being more “Christian” I wonder, to turn the other cheek rather than to retaliate with personal attacks? I believe Mitt Romney is a great man, and that he shows it by staying true to his beliefs, and being enough of a man to campain fairly and honestly. Romney should win this campaign, and even if he doesn’t, it will be because he is the better man.
Rommney would bring honor back to this country He is smart, can think turn things around, he is able to pull people together to get jobs done His ego does not get in the way He has been married to the same women, wonderful family Would you rather Have explosive tempered people to or lies He changed his mind when he looked in to the issue to say it would be handled better on the state level nothing wrong with that He was Honest and He has not been mean or hateful in his ads the are statements that are true about Huck, and what he said about the rest if the only error he made was about his Dad then may we all burn in hell He is a good leader and I would be honored to have him as Commander of our Country!
they are very liberal “THE GLOBE ” has always” been to the LEFT they are Democrats remember “THE KENNEDYS”
The Concord Monitor just endorsed Hillary Clinton on the Democratic side. And we are supposed to believe that John McCain is best for the conservatives of America when you endorse a socialist panderer such as Hillary Clinton? I hope that this anti-endorsement shows everyone that the Concord Monitor is comprised of a bunch of liberals who are sore afraid of Mitt Romney because he will beat their queen Hillary in a National Election. John McCain will do as well as Bob Dole did against Bill Clinton-and that is lose by a lot. The Concord Monitor knows this, but hopes you won’t see the liberal wolf in conservative sheep’s clothing.
Jenner and several others are right. No one should give either Boston paper any credence at all. They were left leaning or liberal to begin with. Only by seeking to embarrass Romney can they try to keep the focus on softer targets for Hilary.
And for those who won’t vote for Romney becuase he is a Mormon; Folks get with the program, your going to cost the republicans the election if you not careful. Its time to grow up, leave your religious bigotry and bias aside and realize that 177+ years of LDS history and successful world wide growth can’t be all wrong - you know maybe there is something to this Mormon thing after all.
For a country more committed to Christian values and more focused on the ideals of our founding fathers the choice is clear - Pick Mitt..!
The supreme court is ONE judge away from overturning Roe vs Wade. If elected Romney will appoint a pro-lifer. The Concord Monitor knows this and is afraid of Romney.
Why don’t they attack Huckabee or McCain? Because they know that niehter of them can win against a POWERFUL Hillary Obama (pres/vp) ticket.
A primary vote for Huckabee or McCain is a November vote for Hillary, a vote for ABORTION.
Republican and values voters: Think about the obvious.
It’s about time that we get a candidate that is pro-responsibility…that is, a candidate who reduces federal spending and encourages people to take personal responsibility. This is probably the only candidate who can honestly do this. If you need proof, look at the Massachusetts budget since he came into office (I lived there while he was governor). He appeals to the religious right, the fiscal conservatives, and those who believe we need to maintain a strong military (in which I am enlisted).
I’m originally from New York state, and it makes us New Yorkers sick how Hillary used our state to her political advantage. At least Mitt lived in Massachussets and went to school there. Can anyone see through Hillary and how phony she is, or is it just me? Bill Clinton brought shame to the honor and prestige of the US Presidency and to our country. Answer me this…what will Bill be doing in the White House if Hillary becomes president? Do you really want to bring him back to the White House? Come on people, wake up and see Hill and Bill for what they really are!
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY ENDORSE MITT ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT. It’s about time we had a candidate like him.
LIBERAL PAPER = LIBERAL OPINION!
I would be worried if they did endorse him. Of course the left wants McCain and Huckabee. They are the TWO candidates that will hand the white house to hill wraped in a big republican bow. Wise up people. Romney and Thompson are the only two that can stand up to HILL w/ a smart and clear plan. However, Romney is the only one who can stand beside her make her morals and character look like pond scum. Romney can beat her… Thompson might could if he would get off the bench….I am for Romney all the way. If he dont make it lets pray Fred has a chance…else HILL WILL BE ON THE HILL>
Those asking Romney to describe his faith>>>> get over it already.. I mean if you want to know what LDS believe in go to the LDS.org web site, ask one of those missionaries on bikes, call up the local church. However, to ask a candidate to give a play by play of his religion is absurd.. I don t trust televangelist but I am not yelling for Huckabee to explain to me what he has faith in… cause i really dont care… i look at action and behavior not some stereotype of religion. THere are good and bad in every faith. Romney has proven he is of high morals WITH HIS ACTION!
